Telehealth 101

What is Telehealth?

Telehealth Counseling sessions are similar to in-person sessions with your therapist, but instead of coming into the office, you and your therapist meet in a comfortable place of your choosing using interactive audio and video technology. This means you can meet with your therapist from your couch, your bedroom, your office—basically, from wherever you have privacy and access to the Internet!. These virtual sessions are HIPAA compliant, in order to protect your privacy and confidentiality.

While being in a room with your therapist is the traditional and sometimes more preferred option, there are many reasons why Telehealth is ideal:

● Telehealth minimizes the inconvenience of travel time and associated costs. We wanted to ease the stress that clients often experience just traveling to the office for appointments. Things like snow, rain, traffic, getting childcare, finding parking, etc. make traveling even short distances annoying. Telehealth appointments minimize the inconvenience of travel time and associated costs.

● You don’t have to miss a session if you don’t have access to transportation, don’t feel well enough to leave the house, or don’t have access to childcare. Telehealth can help take the stress out of last-minute challenges that can get in the way of you attending a session in person.

● The benefits of Telehealth are supported by research. Research has found that video therapy is as effective as in-person therapy. And thanks to a highly secure connection, our sessions will remain private.

● Telehealth requires no special software or technical skills. All you need is a computer (with an integrated camera) or a smartphone. It’s as simple as that.

In many ways Telehealth is very similar to video chatting with your friends or family through Facetime or Facebook messenger.  If you have done that before, you can easily make the switch to Telehealth!  If you are nervous about getting started, we will always help you get connected the first time and support you with tech issues (to the best of our abilities!) along the way. Feel free to contact us for additional information or to answer any questions you may have about counseling through Telehealth.
